Bees in the Classroom!

As you might have read, the 3H Crew are growing Lima beans in the classroom. We got to thinking about what some of the differences were between our plants and plants that are grown outside. One thing we don’t have in the classroom are flying insects. It got us talking about the role of bees and pollination. To do this, we made “bee sticks” with expired bees. We examined the bees closely and learned about the role and life span of the worker bees, the drones, and the queen bee. Now, our lima beens are self pollinating plants, but we used the bee sticks to imitate how worker bees travel from flower to flower collecting nectar and distributing pollen. The room was filled with buzzing, check it out!
