Bees in the Classroom!

As you might have read, the 3H Crew are growing Lima beans in the classroom. We got to thinking about what some of the differences were between our plants and plants that are grown outside. One thing we don’t have in the classroom are flying insects. It got us talking about the role of bees and pollination. To do this, we made “bee sticks” with expired bees. We examined the bees closely and learned about the role and life span of the worker bees, the drones, and the queen bee. Now, our lima beens are self pollinating plants, but we used the bee sticks to imitate how worker bees travel from flower to flower collecting nectar and distributing pollen. The room was filled with buzzing, check it out!

Hour of Code (well… maybe it was actually an hour and 1/2 of code!)

This afternoon, the 3H Crew members were amazing problem solvers and worked feverishly on coding! The first challenge of the day was to program droids and create their own Star Wars game. Those who successfully passed all 15 Star Wars challenges, were able to move on and explore other coding challenges such as Minecraft and Flappy Code. If you want to give coding a try, visit Code.org! Anyone can learn how to code!

Preparing for Student-led Conferences

This year the members of the 3H Crew will be taking the lead when it comes to conferences. Yes, it is true, the 3rd graders will be running the conferences with their parents starting next week. To prepare, they have been reflecting on their work so far this year, determining their strengths, analyzing work to set goals for the next marking period, and finding lots of evidence to share at the conference. After a bit of rehearsal time next week, I feel certain that the 3H Crew will do an amazing job with their first student-led conferences.

Triple Whammy Essays: The Year of Billy Miller

Recently, the 3H Crew participated in the Global Read Aloud and read The Year of Billy Miller. Each student picked a character from the story and identified 3 character traits. Next they found evidence from the story to back up their ideas. We used our Whole Brain Teaching techniques and started practicing our oral paragraphs using air punctuation. After lots of rehearsal, we put our ideas to paper. See if you can spot the Triple Whammy sentences in our opening and closing paragraphs.

Lima Bean Experiment, Oh My!

Were you wondering what happened with our Lima Bean Experiment? You will be happy to know that the plants are not only alive, they are thriving! The 3H Crew has been keeping track of their growth using the app, Pic Collage. Below you will see how the plants looked when they were 27 days old, and again when they were 50 days old. You will notice that we have transplanted the lima beans into bigger pots, and added worm compost that was donated from the 2nd graders.

Global Monster Project

Do you know what the 3H Crew has in common with 40 other classes from Brazil, Myanmar, Canada, Russia, England, Taiwan, and 14 US States? We are participants in the 2015 Global Monster Project! Each class had to submit a description of one part or accessory for the 2015 monster. Our contribution was the nose ring: 5” wide oval-shaped hoop, neon green with blue polka dots and rust; a spider, ghost, skull & crossbones hanging down. Now that all of the monster parts have been described, it is up to each of the participating classes to build the entire monster. We decided to create a 3D monster, so it takes a lot of measuring, planning, problem solving, cooperating, and team work to make it happen. Right now our room is full of recycled materials that hopefully soon will resemble a monster! Check back soon to see the monster come to life!

More monster math…The monster has 11 feet, each foot has 3 toes. How many toes in all? It takes team work to make 33 toes!

A Very Flat Visitor!

A little while ago, the 3H Crew had a very unusual visitor. Flat Stanley dropped by and had some adventures with the 3H Crew. He was the “honorary” 3H News Break Host, went kite flying, and heard all about International Dot Day. Thanks to Tuesday’s cousin sharing Flat Stanley with our class!

Experimenting with Lima Beans

The 3H Crew is conducting experiments with lima beans. We wanted if there was any difference in planting dry seeds versus seeds that had been soaked. We planted some seeds in between the paper towel and the cup, and others in the soil. Today each group took a photo of their experiment and labeled it using pic collage. Check out the results!

Rotary Club Visits the 3H Crew

IMG_0064

Local Rotary Club members came to visit last week and shared all of the wonderful things the Rotary Club does to help our community. Some of the great work the Rotary Club does is support students to study abroad, give scholarships, and give dictionaries to 3rd graders. The 3H Crew was thrilled to receive their own dictionary. This is valued tool will come in handy for many years to come. Thank you Rotary Club!

International Dot Day!

The 3H Crew celebrated International Dot Day. We read the book, The Dot, written by Peter Reynolds and decided how we were going to make a mark on the world. We designed our own dots and experimented with augmented reality using the Quiver app. We connected with 2 other classes from New York and Massachusetts using Skype. This was a great project to start our year together.IMG_0048 IMG_0043 IMG_0042 IMG_0051 IMG_0049 IMG_0062
